About Stereotypes
I have chosen an article which is called "Hollywood Stereotypes: Why Are Russians the Bad Guys?" It was posted on BBC site on November 5th, 2014 and written by Tom Brook.
I've found it really interesting to read because the author explains the reasons why Hollywood film directors most of the time choose Russians as villians.
To begin with, Brook uses Nina Khrushcheva's words, the great-granddaughter of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, as an argument that due to the Cold War people have an assosiation with Russia as villians. Moreover, these stereotypes are supported by the Vladimir Putin's tough stance as the reason for the increased presence of Russian villains now.
Secondly, the author mentions a few stereotypes which are connected with another countries and nationalities. For example, Brook tells us about 9/11 attacks, so this made a growing concern among Arab-Americans that they were being typecast as terrorists. In addition to that, he tells that China has contributed its share of movie villains going back to the time when Fu Manchu appeared as a distrustful Chinese character, but due to the fact that China has become a vitally important market for the studios, this country is not included in this "list of evils" anymore.
The words and some expressions which I have found interesting are the following:
1. Evildoer - someone who does something evil.
2. 3B Syndrome - Usher syndrome is a condition characterized by partial or total hearing loss and vision loss that worsens over time.
3. the 9/11 attacks - September 11 attacks, series of airlinehijackings and suicide attacks committed in 2001.
3. the 9/11 attacks - September 11 attacks, series of airlinehijackings and suicide attacks committed in 2001.
Hello Nastya,
ОтветитьУдалитьYou've found an interesting article! Great! Have you summarized it all or just a part of it. Your symmary seems to me to be incomplete. If it's complete, it is nessary to add a concluding sentence. Have a look at the summary template I've shared with your group in my post. Also, don't forget to finish the 2nd task.
